Experience
I attended Morehouse College, where I earned my bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. This was an extension of what I had been doing my entire life. Even before I began attending kindergarten, I would "play school" with various friends and relatives, and I always put myself in the position of teacher. I knew that I would one day be a teacher, even before I had anything to teach my students. This proved true when, at the age of 14, I began as a personal tutor to fellow students. I have never held a job that did not involve teaching on some level. I believe my job as an educator is to add to the experiences children who come under my tutelage have had, by providing them with additional, positive learning experiences. I am a strong advocate of Gardner's theory that emphasizes multiple intelligences in students, and use these to enhance my tutoring techniques, not to pigeonhole students into one mode of learning. I enjoy seeing a student shine when I use the method of tutoring that works best for them, after having struggled with a subject in the classroom setting. I make sure to highlight my students' successes, and encourage them to work hard, because they know they can succeed.
