B.F.A in Theatre from New York University

Experience

My name is Jordan Baum and I hope you'll consider me to tutor for you! My recent teaching experiences, with students from fifth grade to college freshmen, my dedication to education and individual learning, and my current academic endeavors of writing, literature, and theatre, all, I believe, will be a valuable resource to you and to any student who is navigating the difficult terrain of reading, writing, high school, and the fullest expression of one’s voice. In my time at New York University, I worked toward (and recently completed) a theatre major, with a special focus on playwriting. However, I remained committed to challenging myself through academia, with honors seminars, a spot in the Honors Theatre Studies program, and a schedule filled with literature and writing classes. This, coupled with my theatre training, has given me a unique and double-sided educational experience - one the one hand, an expansion of knowledge through research and individual study, and on the other hand, a hands-on training knee-deep in collaboration, a honing of the creative muscle, and leadership and organizational skills. Additionally; academically - my high school saw me take every AP class available to me, including AP English Literature, AP Calculus, AP Government, and AP Biology, on all of which I received a 5, the highest score available. I believe that my education has given me the leadership skills, communication values, and dedication to growth that will benefit any student I work with. In addition, I’ve recently begun teaching and working with students myself. My time as a Playwriting T.A. for first year NYU students has been one of the most valuable and rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve especially grown interested in and dedicated to guiding students toward their individual writing voices and helping them unpack new tools and vocabulary from plays and pieces of writing that don’t look like anything they’ve ever read before. Additionally, much of my time at the Pasadena Musical Theatre Program was dedicated to working with the 5th-12th grade students enrolled there - whether it was directing them in rehearsals, guiding them one-on-one in choosing audition materials, or teaching them acting technique in a classroom. Teaching students in these age ranges has helped me uncover a passion for the young reader and writer who has just begun discovering what he or she has to say, and has not yet discovered how he or she can say it. As a teacher, I could not be more enthusiastic about helping students achieve their educational dreams. I have a particular affinity for the creative individual to whom a multiple choice format might not at first make sense, and whose interests and voice may not at first seem clear or correct, because they do not match the interests and voices of those around them. As a student, I look forward to learning how I can best help every new student that comes my way. As outlined above, I believe that my education in both collaboration and academia, my creative mindset, and my dedication to student growth will be exactly what you need to help your student move forward.
