Kendra O.
Private tutor in Brooklyn, NY
Education
I was a music major and chemistry minor at DePaul University in Chicago, graduating with a 3.7 GPA. I have a master's degree in chemistry from CUNY Lehman College. I also hold a post baccalaureate certificate of premedical studies from Chapman University.
Experience
I have tutored science for the past 10 years. I have been a chemistry teacher at a competitive specialized high school in NYC for the past 5 years where I teach Regents Chemistry and IB Chemistry. As a high school science teacher I have seen dramatic student achievement with high pass rates on both the Regents Chemistry exam and the IB Chemistry exams. I want to tutor because I enjoy breaking down complex science topics and helping students understand them better. I also enjoy helping students gain confidence in the material so they feel more prepared and successful on assessments. I am also a recipient of the Math For America Master Teacher Fellowship, a competitive program that awards highly qualified science teachers from NYC to participate in exciting collaborative experiences, mentorships, and workshops.

Hobbies
I am very warm and approachable, yet am very structured and good at helping students make individual plans to meet their academic goals. I think it's important to help students realize their mistakes and learn from them, rather than me the teacher just giving them the answers. I challenge students to work through their struggles and frustrations, as it is a part of the learning process and strengthens their memory and academic skills. I enjoy getting to know the students strengths so we can use those to help strengthen their growth areas and gin confidence in their academic work.
