I attend the University of Michigan. During my time at Ann Arbor, I was the leader of a mentoring and tutoring organization called Minds Making a Difference. The organization's purpose is to help high school students in Detroit get ready to take the ACT. Under my leadership, Minds Making a Difference would assess a student's initial level using practice tests. We would then focus learning sessions on improving test taking skills like keyword identification, time management, and anxiety reduction. This experience gave me the ability to recognize different learning styles and how to develop a tutoring approach that helped them reach their classroom goals. I also worked as a program specialist for the Children's Aid Society. While English, Reading Comprehension, and Math were my specialties, I would handle other subjects, too. I developed curriculum, tutored, and managed other tutors as well. I believe that for any student to be successful, he or she must learn all the fundamental concepts. These concepts are the building blocks to not only do well on a test, but to build confidence for future activities, like taking a Advanced Placement course or getting a college scholarship.
