Experience

* I have tutored US History to Dalton students over the past 2 summers. * My most recent US History student to take the SAT 2 US History Subject Exam (this spring) earned a 770. * I see tutoring as a way to do what I do best: work 1-on-1 with students in subjects I love (especially Spanish!), figuring out how they'll learn best, and helping them grow in skill, confidence and humanity. * I have taught for 16 years at 3 great independent schools: The Latin School of Chicago (4 years), Phillips Exeter Academy (9 years), and Avenues: The World School (beginning year 4 in August). * I ran a dormitory of 40 high school boys at Exeter for 8 years! Many of them still keep in touch with me regularly. * I am the Head of Grade for the first graduating class at Avenues (Class of 2016), and I have been with this group since their 9th grade year! * In addition to US History, I have taught interdisciplinary Humanities courses, 20th Century World History, Classical Greece and Rome, Medieval European history, Early Modern European history, Absolutism and Revolution (Europe, 1660-1800), Japanese history, African Civilization, Islamic History, and electives in Gender and Race in American history. * I speak Spanish and some French, having studied in Paris, Buenos Aires, and Cuernavaca (Mexico). * Most recently, I completed a course in instructional pedagogy for teachers of Spanish at the Instituto Cervantes, NYC. * Administrative roles I have held include being: Head of Grade (Avenues, ongoing); Curriculum Specialist for Humanities History (Avenues, 2012-2014); Director, Junior Studies Program (Exeter, 2007-2012); Dormitory Head (Exeter, 2004-2012); Assistant Director and then Program Director for summer programs at Stanford and UC Berkeley (2006-2010). *** If you are interested, I am happy to provide you with additional details on my teaching and administrative roles, as well as conferences attended, references, etc.***

Hobbies

* I love Argentine tango! It is a dance that revolves around communication: paying attention to your partner, listening, observing to one another's movements and pauses, and creating together. * I took up cello as an adult when I realized I couldn't sustain being a full-time graduate student, full-time teacher, and full-time trainee with Deeply Rooted Dance Productions in Chicago. * I started teaching myself guitar this summer via online lessons. * SoulCycle has become a regular feature of my mornings, plus weekend bike rides. * I earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do when I was 32 after 2 years of study. * I adore learning and speaking other languages. It stretches my mind, my perceptions, and my understanding of others while feeding my love of sound and exploration. * I love reading fantasy fiction and watching movies like The Lord of The Rings and Transformers. I haven't seen Age of Ultron (Avengers) yet, though.
