Experience

I have been teaching SAT Prep (English) for TestTakers for the past nine years. I have received stellar reports from past students who, under my tutelage, received high marks on the SAT’s. I refuse to see standardized testing as the horizon line by emphasizing the student's need to develop their individual voice through writing/poetry, public speaking/performance. I taught a five-week course for Legal Outreach, a college-bound program for inner-city public high school youth. The program was five days a week from nine a.m. to four p.m in the middle of the summer. I found that creativity can unlock strength in character which prove to be a valuable of resource in the success of these students as individuals and as test takers. While we did have a set curriculum, we also had time to explore a more interdisciplinary approach much like the one I cultivate through Gallatin. We watched movies such as Heathers and Shaun of the Dead and proceed to write essays discussing the exploration of the liminal, and the societal and psychological implications of numbness and sleepwalking. We wrote poems and brought them each Friday for an “open mic” session. I discovered my voice among my students. My goal as an educator is to foster creation in others, especially our youth. I am invested in my students finding that creativity can unlock strength in character which prove to be a valuable of resource in the success of these students as individuals and as test takers. In my classroom I strive to create a sense of family, to open up the opportunity for self-expression, and to discover what drives each student. When we realize that conversation is our purpose in life, we let our souls speak thereby fostering a community of individuals who can use their talents as a tool for action and gain a better understanding of the self.

Hobbies

I am a poet, performance artist, dancer, costume stylist, and educator. At NYU Gallatin, I developed a concentration of study titled, Celebrate Multiplicity: Reintegrating the Self through Creative Presence. It is invested in the idea that in order to heal the Split Self, we must embrace the duality that is inherent in our human nature through the discipline of reintegration practiced by meditation, movement, and play. I am an advocate for artistic expression as a basic human need as I believe creativity is synonymous with health and creativity spawns action. I want to bring people closer to the lessons life can teach by embracing the process. I want to create new language to inform the existence of the self and let that guide the path I walk: a life which lives and breathes art, and art that lives and breathes life.
