Hobbies
I am currently completing my masters degree at Fordham University and I am hoping to teach at a school in NYC beginning in September. There are many reasons I would like to teach in an NYC school. As a product of an urban public school myself (Boston), I believe NYC is an area where I could add value. I hope to teach at a school that fosters a community environment because I would strive to create a classroom where students were comfortable sharing their ideas and goals. Respect and consideration of one another’s’ ideas is an effective way to develop critical thinking. These skills can be used throughout life; regardless of the environment or situation. I would like a school that encouraged not only academic pursuits but also artistic or athletic goals. Extracurricular activities are engaging as well as motivational. Pursuing artistic avenues actually improves academic performance. As a product of an arts high school, I believe this is one of the most effective ways to create the community environment that I strive for in my classroom. Although I am an ELA teacher, I have had the opportunity to teach art classes. There are so many connections to literature within art such as tone, mood, subject, etc. Learning these concepts through art increases your chances of understanding the same concepts in literature. I believe I can take these philosophies and apply them to a tutoring environment.
