Experience

When I tutor, I believe that children learn best when their subject matter is related to the world around them in some way. I have several years of experience tutoring different age groups, with a focus on grades 6 and 7. As a tutor, I can work with children on many subjects, but my focuses are math and English. Both of these subjects can be very exciting, because they can help show the child their world from a new perspective, and they also have long-term practical applications. For example, we need to use math in order to balance our budgets, or figure out if we can afford a nice vacation. I currently work as a tutor with City Year. While in undergrad, I took numerous child development courses, as well as completed a thesis on using literature to help with children's therapy.I want my students to come away from tutoring sessions with me with a better understanding of how to approach and solve problems, because that skill set is more important than any other they will gain in their lives. I have a bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature from the College of Wooster, and I have had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris and Kenya.
