Experience
I think of my approach to tutoring as recycling. That is, I begin by learning what my students already know and what has worked for them in the past, then devise creative methods of putting that existing knowledge and those successful processes to work in the new context. I developed this approach after working with freshmen at Baruch College and Brooklyn College enlightened me as to the way that we are all always in transition to a degree, carrying with us old knowledge and experiences as we embark on new phases of life. When preparing students for standardized tests, I build on this foundation by also incorporating questions I employed as an Instructor of World Literature. For example, when working with SAT students, I routinely encourage students to think not just about what the author is saying, but also what he or she is doing with them. Thinking like the test maker and not just the test taker offers a great degree of clarity about what is required to succeed in that context. I'm also an advocate of serious investment, believing that results are proportionate to time invested, and studying really does pay off. Of course, that doesn't mean that studying and preparation must be drudgery. A change in approach can make all the difference, transforming the effort into an enjoyable process. I'm a lover of literature and former PhD student in English Literature. Some of my favorite writings include Moby Dick, the writings of Kurt Vonnegut, James Joyce, and James Baldwin, and Bob Dylan's lyrics. I hold a B.A. from the University of Michigan, where I studied English Literature and American History. I also competed on the academic bowl team.
