Private tutor in Brooklyn, NY
Appalachian State University - BA, Interdisciplinary Studies , Columbia University in the City of New York - PhD, Ethnomusicology
I received my PhD from Columbia University and hold a certificate in innovative pedagogy from the Teagle Institute. While I was working toward my PhD, I taught college-level courses in cultural studies, anthropology, writing, and music. My teaching style is to tie course material to the students' areas of interest, raising interest and engagement. I also integrate technology into my approach, allowing students to look at the material in different formats and from different perspectives. My belief is that this expanded approach allows students to develop their thought processes more thoroughly. Test preparation is one of my strongest areas as a tutor, particularly TOEFEL, TESOL, and GRE prep, along with AP Spanish and English. I have also taught in a variety of other areas, including anthropology, cultural studies, Portuguese, music, ESL, reading, and composition. I've worked with high-achieving junior and senior high schoolers in South Korea, in large group, small group and one-on-one settings, and taught adult English classes across a wide range of skill levels. In addition, I have worked one-on-one with adults learning Portuguese. This broad-based exposure has made me very aware of the way needs differ from student to student, and I like discovering creative approaches to suit each type of student.
