Experience

I have an extensive private tutoring background, extending from multiple types of standardized test prep to a variety of custom-designed educational programs. Moreover, I’ve helped students ranging from elementary school age ELLs to graduate students. Having done very well on tests from a young age, I became interested in helping others succeed. After qualifying for National Merit Semi-Finalist status, I tutored some high school peers for their SATs; later on, I branched out into Regents and AP Test prep help. I’ve never received less than a 93 on a NYS Regents exam, and I was awarded an AP Scholar with Distinction award for my high, consistent scores (AP European History, AP US Government, AP Microeconomics, AP American History, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and AP Calculus BC). Later on, while taking a full course load, I tutored college students for GREs and GMATs (I got a 750 on my GMAT--the 99+ percentile). During my college years, I also taught Somali refugees in the city of Buffalo, Korean ELLs ranging from 5 to 10 years of age, as well as runaway and homeless youth, at the shelter Compass House. Since moving to New York City, I’ve continued to tutor college students for the GRE and the GMAT, while also working with underprivileged and immigrant youth, via the state- and federally-funded learning centers. I enjoy tutoring for many reasons, but two stand out beyond the rest: first, I take pleasure in expanding my students’ horizons (and, subsequently, their test scores); second, tutoring allows me the time to pursue my creative work (writing and acting).

Hobbies

I love many things that the Greater NYC area offers. Most of the time I’m in the city, providing academic tutoring and editing services to my students. I balance that time against time for my own writing, acting classes, and performances. I’m probably also dividing my attention between a couple of books. When not tied up with my own projects, I enjoy taking in a broad range of films (I’ve made it to every New York Asian Film Festival in the last five years) and theater (BAM, Lincoln Center, the Signature Theater, etc.). Generally, I also enjoy taking in new restaurants, going to lectures, and slipping away to a small house in Ulster County.
