Experience
I worked as a writing consultant for four years in Columbia College's Academic Skills Center. During this time, I helped many students with writing skills, literature analysis, subject specific comprehension and study skills. I firmly believe in helping students find their own ability to improve themselves, and therefore take ownership of their own words, writing, and voice. This manifests in facilitating and guiding the student, but never by taking control and dominating the tutoring session. I work under the philosophy of teaching students how to think, not what to think. I love helping students discover/strengthen their individual strengths and abilities. I find this work very empowering, to myself and my students. I also completed a tutoring methodology class every semester at school, in which I learned various strategies for individualized tutoring. I am a voracious reader and learner, which provides a large base to draw knowledge from. I have the ability to not only retain information but to share it in a way that is conducive for the tutee.
