Private tutor in Brooklyn, NY

Education

As an undergraduate, I attended the Boston University Honors Program on an academic scholarship. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude in 2006 with a dual degree in English and Philosophy and a minor in Spanish. I won the John N. Findlay Award for Philosophy and earned Distinction in English. I went on to attend Columbia Law School, where I graduated as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar in 2009. I served as President of Columbia's Criminal Justice Action Network, and I was an Articles Editor for the Columbia Human Rights Law Review.

Experience

- Teaching Experience - I have a breadth of experience teaching and contributing to educational publications. My tutoring experience dates back to high school, when I volunteered as an algebra tutor. As an undergraduate, I was an English tutor for a ninth grade student through a community service program at MATCH Charter Public School. At Columbia Law School, I contributed to two educational publications: a legal manual for prisoners and the #1 employment law casebook. I worked with adult learners at two NYC job training programs, where I provided one-on-one coaching and developed and led interactive workshops on employment skills and employment discrimination law. I have been a private LSAT and writing tutor through WyzAnt since November 2012, and in April 2013 I joined the faculty of Essex County College as an adjunct instructor of English. Through these positions, I have engaged students from all levels of expertise and education, from graduates of elite schools to prisoners without high school diplomas. This experience has given me the essential skills to tailor my approach according to individual students' needs. - Writing Experience - I love finding the perfect words and crafting the perfect piece. Through my work as a news writer, journal editor, casebook writer, blogger, and attorney, I have over seven years of experience contributing to a diverse variety of leading publications. As a writer for Join Together, the leading online news provider in the prevention and treatment of drug and alcohol use, I wrote feature articles and news summaries for e-newsletters boasting 3,000 and 18,000 subscribers. At Columbia, I served as a staff editor for the Columbia Human Rights Law Review, then an articles editor for its Jailhouse Lawyer's Manual, a unique two-volume legal handbook for prisoners, where I edited eight chapters and managed a team of staff editors. I also wrote the employment discrimination chapter of an annual supplement to the top-selling employment law casebook. As an attorney, I have edited and written for authoritative treatises and nationally-disseminated news update publications. I also wrote judicial decisions to enforce federal employment discrimination laws as a judicial law clerk at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Currently, I write for a legal blog at the Berniard Law Firm and teach writing courses at Essex County College.
