Experience

I am a philosopher and former college debate professor with 20+ years of experience, coaching competitive Speech and Debate, in formal (classroom) and informal (private students, group classes, after-school, summer camp) environments alike. I have taught at Fordham University, the United States Military Academy at West Point and numerous prestigious middle and high schools. I currently work in the technology industry & tutor students of all ages (elementary, middle, high school, college & adult/ professional) because I miss teaching! My tutoring practice specializes in Philosophy, Public Speaking/ Communication, Speech and Debate (all competitive events, specializing in cross-examination/ policy debate), Speech pronunciation coaching, English/ Language Arts (writing, reading, spelling, phonics, pronunciation, grammar) & academic research skills. I enjoy encouraging students and inspiring a love for learning. 11 undergraduate students who came to me as undeclared majors went on to earn PhDs in Philosophy! If you are ready, I am happy to nurture you to the the highest levels of academic and professional achievement. I will personalize each lesson to your needs, optimizing for relevance and enjoyability. I am a patient and natural listener. No question you could ask is stupid or unwelcome. Students with learning differences, particularly ADD/ ADHD: I have numerous tactics & strategies to help you succeed. I am a native Standard American English speaker who started reading at age 3 & read 100 books by the age of 4. I skipped the first grade, and received a perfect score on the verbal sections of the SAT exam (reading + writing and language). I competed regularly in the national spelling bee as well as speech & debate. I have worked as an Editorial Assistant at Oxford University Press and Executive Editor at Global Scholarly Press. I adore the English language arts & enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels. My spoken languages include English, Malayalam & limited Spanish. Whether your challenge is for school, test prep or personal interest, I am happy to help. In previous lessons I have assisted students with completing a project or assignment, working through difficult concepts, filling in missing background information, developing better study skills or overcoming low motivation. I encourage prospective students (and parents, if high school aged or younger) to schedule a brief, 10 minute consultation to share your needs and expectations, establish goals and draw up a plan for achieving them. Throughout our work together, I will track the student's success toward those targets. I look forward to building your success together. Contact me today to get started!
