Experience

I currently tutor with Varsity Tutors and Wyzant and have also tutored privately over the past six years in English, ESL, music, piano, and writing. For two years, I taught English in a public high school and middle school in NYC, where I also scheduled regular tutoring sessions with individual students. In college, I worked in a high school writing center, taught music in two different after-school programs, and worked as a piano accompanist for children's choirs and middle and high school student performers. Even in high school, I worked as a peer tutor, in my church daycare, and as a pianist for other student musicians at my school and others. Basically, I've always loved working with children and young people of all ages. While education in general is important to me, I especially love working with students one-on-one and getting to know individual strengths and interests. So many students lose confidence because they see themselves as struggling with a subject, when actually the strengths they already have in other areas are helping them immensely! I love seeing students build that confidence and realize that they have it in them to excel. In addition to tutoring, I work as a freelance book editor and musician, so I'm surrounded by other professionals who excel in the fields I tutor as well. It's great to see the real-world application of ideas and skills that students learn in school or in tutoring sessions. I promise you, you're going to use more of these skills than you might expect! I hold a master's degree in secondary English education and have also taken undergraduate-level courses in teaching and tutoring writing. Relevant test scores: SAT Critical Reading: 780 SAT Writing: 740 AP English Language: 5 AP English Literature: 4 AP Spanish: 4 GRE Verbal: 165

Hobbies

Reading is my biggest addiction! I love discovering new books and discussing them with other people who get as excited as I do. I especially love reading young adult books and science fiction or dystopian literature. Whenever I have free time, I can also be found singing or playing the piano. My background is in classical music, but I love pretty much all genres. Other favorite pastimes include knitting, cooking, eating, and napping.
