Experience
Last semester I completed my Master’s degree at NYU in the Sociology of Education program, where I focused my studies on social justice arts education programs in schools and community-based organizations. I am very passionate about working with young people of all ages and backgrounds in educational, recreational, athletic, and arts-based settings. My past experiences working with youth include math tutoring, college access mentoring, and teaching art: I worked with the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP), where I tutored and provided classroom support for 8th and 9th grade students behind grade level in math at a San Diego middle school and high school. I led before-school and in-class individual and small group tutoring sessions, while assisting teachers with coordinating class assignments and lesson plans. I also worked with Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) as a counseling intern at a San Diego high school. I was a mentor and tutor working individually with 10th grade students to provide guidance and discuss personal goals and concerns, college workshops, college visits, and summer academic programs. I volunteered at a non-profit arts organization in San Diego as an Artist Mentor, teaching a weekly visual arts session for 7-9 year old children from refugee and immigrant families. I developed projects and lesson plans using a variety of mediums and creative approaches. I have approached tutoring, mentoring, and teaching as constructive, creative, and dialogic processes. This involves working with students to build on their achievements and work through challenges in order to construct their own learning. I believe all educators must consciously strive to engage and connect with their students' experiences, interests, and perspectives in order to make education relevant to their realities. I am confident that my strong foundations in math, English, writing, history and the arts, along with my previous experiences facilitating math, arts, and college access sessions would allow me to effectively connect with and tutor students at all ages and academic achievement levels. My SAT scores were: 790 (Math), 670 (Critical Reading), and 690 (Writing).
