Experience
My name is Thomas, and I live in Brooklyn, New York. I've attended both Ohio State University and Mercy College. Early in my career, I was a newspaper reporter, and also managed national magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and Fitness. While in journalism, I realized that the written word is very powerful and made a decision to become a teacher to pass this empowerment on to students. I taught English, journalism, economics, and global history in the New York City public school system. I found that all children can learn, if their teacher/tutor is willing to find the style of learning that works best for each student. My goal was to teach students learning strategies that would enable them to become lifelong learners, and to foster independent learning. I use the Socratic method when I tutor, by asking questions and allowing the student to teach me. I use a series of questions that helps the student find the path to the correct conclusion. Sometimes I simply ask my students to tell me everything they know about their subject, or a particular area within their subject. I'm qualified to tutor individual courses, including essay editing, writing, grammar and mechanics, and English. I can assist your student in preparing for placement tests, such as the ISEE and the HSPT.In my free time, I enjoy taking long bike rides around the city.
