Private tutor in Brooklyn, NY

Education

Creative Writing MFA candidate at Columbia University Graduate of Grinnell College with a BA in English Literature AA from Bard High School Early College

Experience

I have been tutoring students in reading and writing for six years. For the past year, I worked as a private tutor (http://www.wyzant.com/Tutors/NY/Brooklyn/7938217/), but initially started at Bard High School Early College, where I logged the most tutoring hours of my class and helped teach other tutors as part of a preparatory course for tutors. Last spring, I returned to BHSEC to continue working with students at the writing center, from helping 9th graders outline their first attempts to grapple with Shakespeare to more complex senior theses on queer/feminist film theory. From struggling students seeking to improve their comprehension, to doctoral candidates looking to polish their articles before submitting to journals--I have the tools and expertise to help you. For two years I was the Co-editor in Chief of "The Grinnell Review," the premier literary and arts publication at Grinnell College. My duties as editor included: working with writers on revising their pieces, leading workshops and readings, and of course, extensive copy-editing. This fall, I will enter Columbia University's Creative Writing MFA program, specializing in creative nonfiction. I am also the winner of the 2012 Norton Writer's Prize, the 2013 Lorabel Richardson Academy of American Poets Prize, and 2013 The Selden Whitcomb Poetry Prize. My work has appeared in The Rumpus, The New Inquiry, The Siren, Berlin Independents Guide, among many other publications. I scored a perfect 800 on the reading section of the SAT, 720 on the writing section, and 760 on the literature SAT II. I have taken 200-level Latin and Greek classes, and I also speak German, a combined language background that proved invaluable in taking these exams. However, more than SAT prep, I can also offer excellent advice in drafting the infamous college essay. As any parent or high school student knows, the competition to get into the top schools in the US has grown increasingly difficult in the last few years. A good SAT score and a few standard AP classes no longer suffice in setting a potential student apart from the sea of other applicants. For an applicant to be successful, he or she needs a well written personal essay--something that helps them stand out from their seemingly equally qualified peers. I can help you write this essay from initial conception and planning to the final draft. Few high school students have experience writing creative nonfiction; it's just a skill we aren't taught until college, if at all. Creative nonfiction is my area of expertise, and with my help, you can turn your rough college essay into a polished gem.
