Experience
Part of understanding math is having the courage and patience to see it for what it is. Low confidence, feeling distracted, or insecurity can create road blocks to understanding concepts and ideas clearly. Pride, competition, or feeling overly confident can create problems too. My approach is to help students regain trust and confidence in themselves, so that they are able to approach a problem at hand with clarity. I breakdown concepts into manageable steps. I like to work through examples with students, first showing them how I work the problem, then giving more and more responsibility to them until they are showing me how to work the problem. As students practice each step, the mathematics comes to life and the process feels liberating.
